This summer marked a pivotal moment in my life. After making the bold decision to leave my corporate job and dive full-time into my own business, I decided to gift myself something I had always dreamed of: a solo trip around the world.
Over seven incredible weeks, I journeyed through Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Bali, Singapore, Finland, Copenhagen, and Iceland. Four of those weeks were spent traveling alone—a first for me. This adventure wasn’t just about seeing new places; it was about embarking on a journey of self-leadership, self-trust, and pure, unadulterated fun.
Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone
The idea of traveling solo was both exciting and terrifying. Concerns about safety, loneliness, and navigating new countries filled my mind. But I realized that facing these fears head-on was the only way to grow. From navigating the bustling streets of Hanoi to hiking through the lush landscapes of Bali, every challenge I faced alone made me stronger and more confident.
Discovering Self-Leadership and Trust
Being solely responsible for every decision—from where to stay to what to eat—taught me a new level of self-leadership. I learned to trust my instincts, make quick decisions, and adapt to new situations. Whether it was figuring out the Seoul subway system or negotiating prices at a Vietnamese market, each experience honed my ability to trust myself.
The Joy of New Connections
One of the most fulfilling parts of traveling solo was the connections I made along the way. Joining NomadHer opened up opportunities to meet incredible female solo travelers. While in Seoul, I met a group of amazing women through NomadHer, and we went hiking together. In Busan, I had the liberating experience of surfing for the first time with another group of solo travelers. It was incredible to connect with women at all stages of life, all traveling the world on their own terms. It’s funny how pursuing the things you love and dreaming big helps you find your people—and realize you were never crazy after all.
Adventures That Pushed My Boundaries
- Japan & South Korea: I visited ancient temples, tried surfing for the first time, and indulged in the local cuisine.
- Vietnam & Bali: Here, I embraced nature—trekking through rice terraces, riding on the back of a motorbike for the first time, and hiking a volcano at 2 a.m.
- Singapore to Scandinavia: From delicious hawker centers to trying salmon soup, to hiking and seeing puffins and glaciers—these were experiences I’ll never forget.
Lessons Learned Along the Way
- Self-Reliance: Trusting myself was empowering. I navigated challenges that I never thought I could handle alone.
- Overcoming Fear: Safety was a concern, but by staying vigilant and informed, I traveled and overcame my fears.
- Embracing Spontaneity: Some of the best experiences were unplanned—like stumbling upon a local food market in Helsinki or booking a tour of the DMZ.
Why Solo Travel Was the Best Gift to Myself
This trip was more than a vacation; it was a celebration of a new chapter in my life. Stepping away from the corporate grind allowed me to reconnect with myself, explore my passions, and return with a fresh perspective that’s already influencing my business and personal life.
Final Thoughts
If you’re considering traveling alone but are held back by fear or uncertainty, I encourage you to take the leap. Solo travel pushes you out of your comfort zone, teaches you invaluable life skills, and fills your life with stories and friendships that you’ll cherish forever.
