In this episode of the Pivot & Promotion Podcast, I’m answering one of the most common questions I get as a leadership coach: Is coaching only for people who are struggling?
Let’s clear this up right now — coaching isn’t just for people who need help. It’s for high achievers, too. The people who are already doing big things but want to grow faster, lead stronger, and make better decisions. Coaching gives you the clarity, accountability, and strategy to do exactly that.
Listen to the episode here: Coaching Q&A Series: Is Coaching Only For People Who Are Struggling?
Coaching Is for High Achievers
There’s a big misconception that coaching is something you turn to only when things are falling apart — when you’re burned out, lost, or unsure what’s next. But the truth is, many of the most successful people in the world work with coaches.
From CEOs and startup founders to creatives like JLo and Gwyneth Paltrow, high performers across industries know the value of having someone who can see what they can’t, challenge their thinking, and hold them accountable to the next level of growth.
As a coach, I work with people who are already strong leaders — the ones who have vision, drive, and ambition. But even the best leaders need space to think strategically, make aligned decisions, and talk through what’s really happening behind the scenes.
The Power of a Trusted Partner
Here’s the thing: when you’re in a leadership role, you don’t always have someone you can be fully honest with. You might not tell your team every detail of what’s going on. You might filter what you share with your boss or your leadership peers.
That’s where coaching comes in. It’s a confidential space where you can be completely transparent and vulnerable — no judgment, no politics, no need to “save face.”
A coach helps you unpack what’s really going on, call out blind spots, and identify the decisions that align with your values and goals. You get a thought partner who understands the complexity of your world — someone who’s seen your wins and your challenges and can call you back to your best self when things get blurry.
Why Vulnerability Matters for Leaders
When you’re in charge, vulnerability can feel risky. You want to be authentic, but you also need to maintain credibility. You can’t always show every side of what you’re feeling — especially to your team, clients, or partners.
A coach gives you that rare space to drop the guard. To say, “Here’s what’s really happening,” without worrying about how it will be perceived. That’s how you gain clarity, release stress, and make stronger, more grounded decisions.
When you try to hold everything on your shoulders — leading the team, managing expectations, keeping it all together — burnout comes fast. Coaching gives you a safe container to let it all out, get perspective, and rebuild from a place of strength.
You Don’t Have to Do It All Alone
High achievers are used to figuring everything out on their own. You’re the person who always has the answer, always fixes the problem, always takes care of it.
But let’s be real — that gets exhausting.
Having a coach doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’re wise enough to know that even the best leaders need support. You get to stop being the one who always carries it all and instead partner with someone who helps you build smarter strategies and sustain your success long term.
Coaching gives you space to breathe, to think bigger, and to focus on what really matters.
Debunking the Myth
So let’s put this myth to rest: coaching isn’t only for people who are struggling. It’s for leaders, creators, and high achievers who want to grow. It’s for the people who want their blind spots called out, their patterns challenged, and their goals elevated.
It’s for the people who know they can do great things — and want someone in their corner to help them do even greater ones.

Dani Tan: Hi, I'm Dani Tan, and if you are here, you are in the right place. Welcome to the pivot and promotion podcast, where we say, forget the rules because they weren't written for us. I'm Dani Tan. I'm your host as well as career and leadership coach and a proud advocate for redefining what success and leadership looks like. And here's what I know. You can lead at any level. You can pivot at any age and you can make moves that feel right for you. Whether you're climbing the corporate ladder, starting something completely new, or just figuring out your next step, I've got you covered with strategies, stories, and straight up inspiration. So let's make some moves. Welcome to the continuation of the coaching Q and a mini series of common questions and misconceptions that I get asked about coaching.
I'm sharing my take perspective and answers when it comes to these questions that come up. And so the next one that is on the list is, is coaching only for people who are struggling. So this misconception that, [00:01:00] you know, coaching is only for those who Need help who are in a place of struggle or overwhelm. But the truth is I'm going to debunk that because coaching is for high achievers. Coaching is truly, truly for high achievers as well. And so if you think that you have to be in a place of like suffering or struggling to have a coach, that's not the truth. There's plenty of high achievers who have coaches. Please go Google. Famous people or CEOs or executives or startup leaders who have had coaches and you're going to see a laundry list of people from famous folks like JLo or Gwyneth Paltrow to people who head up AI companies, startup companies, founders, big corporations, all who have had coaches or have coaches.
And the reason why is because When you are a hive achiever, you want to have somebody there who can call out if you are missing something, who can call out if you need to try a plan ABC, who is there to support you, who's there to guide you, who [00:02:00] maybe is an expert in what it is that you do, and to really have a partner there that you can unfold everything because when we are in our roles, whatever role it is, if it's your role in your family, if it's your role in your job, if it's a role for your business, Sometimes we got to save face, right? Like we, we don't tell everyone everything. We don't tell the team all the things that are happening, which is what's driving our decisions of what we have to do.
Or we don't tell, um, you know, our, our leadership team, everything that's going on. You don't always necessarily have someone that you can tell everything to, who can also help guide you to have the plan and strategy. Sure. Can you have event session with a family member or with a friend or with a coworker? For sure. But can they also help guide you in what it is that you're trying to do strategically? Yes and no. Sometimes they have some good advice. Sometimes their advice is a bit biased. And so we have to know who are our go to partners to help us do that. So either you're working with a coach who specializes in what you're doing, is an expert in what you're doing, has some shared lived experiences, you will understand your [00:03:00] perspective of how you approach things.
There has to be some common thread between the two of you, but ultimately high achievers definitely use coaches. and here's one thing is being able to practice and have the power and the opportunity to have vulnerability when you are a leader, you're not always able to be fully vulnerable with your team. Even if you want to be, you're not always able to be fully vulnerable with your leadership team either, you know, or if you have your own business, you can't be fully vulnerable with everyone. That you have hired as a contractor or with your partners that you work with, because at the end of the day, you also want to still maintain credibility. You still want to main expertise. And yes, do we want to be authentic and vulnerable?
Sure. A hundred percent, but we can't a hundred percent be that all the time. And sometimes we want to have the unfiltered version and unfiltered conversation with somebody. And so the big thing with a coach is you can have that vulnerability, the ability to be vulnerable with them, knowing that It's just the two of you. It's not going to be like on a tweet somewhere or, you know, on a whatever news, system, news article, it's just the twin of you and you can go ahead and talk about [00:04:00] what's really going, going on with your team, with your company, with what it is that you want to achieve, even if it's with your family, like, Hey, I'm trying to manage this stuff at work. And then this is what's going on with my family or my partner.
And so, you know, Those things are important to have that space so you can be able to make the right decision with clarity when we try to make decisions from a clouded place of judgment, we don't make the right decisions. Or if we try to do everything on our own to hold it on our shoulders. We start to get burnt out, overwhelmed, exhausted, tired. And we don't know what is the right decision to make. And sometimes we misstep because we're human. So the idea of having somebody there to support you is to have someone to bounce those ideas off of and who has seen you in the good and has seen you in the not so great and can call out, Hey, uh, I think this isn't like your true self. Making this decision.
I think this is like the anxiety version of you that's popping up, or I don't think this is really in alignment with what your leadership values are because you don't really speak about one, two, three, and you've kind of just like diverted the plan. So where is this coming from? And to be able to have that [00:05:00] conversation, right. And still maintain your expertise and credibility and all the other spaces, but to know that you have a partner there with you. And I think the other thing is to, you just want to be able to show that you are there when it comes to your. Yourself and being able to show up for yourself when you are someone who is high achieving and you could get everything done.
We're kind of like good at playing of, you know, playing that role in all of our spaces. So I feel like I am type a overachiever, get everything done, can figure it out, can solve all the problems, um, solution, solution, solution. And so when you've done that role for so long, at all different stages of life, Then it may be hard to release that. And so by having a support team for you, you know, whether it's a coach, whether it's a therapist, whether it's both, I usually say it's good to have an entire team of people who can support you from all different angles. Then you're able to not have to always wear that hat of being the doer executor problem solver, strategic thinker, because now you have somebody else there who [00:06:00] can also help support you in those spaces.
And I have a lot of folks who are. Very, very sure of themselves, very confident, always have a plan, but they're exhausted. It's exhausting being the person who always has the solutions and can always solve the problems and can always, you know, pinpoint what needs to be next. You may be tired of doing that. And so it's good to have a space where someone can be there to be like, okay, This is what you said. The plan should be. How can we adjust it? Here are some ideas. So you're not just going in alone, always having to be the one. So this is me debunking the myth that coaching is only for people who are struggling. It's definitely not. It's for high achievers, people who want the blind spots called out, their patterns called out to not always hold all of the weight of the shoulders on them and to really want to continue to grow and achieve.
And to do that, you typically need somebody else there to help bounce those ideas off of and help you. And if you want to. Save face and you want to still continue to be the expert that you are in all the spaces and you want to be able to just [00:07:00] let all hang out and be vulnerable. This is a container that's typically for you. So any questions on this, you know where to find me, but until the next episode. Thank you again for tuning in to today's podcast. I hope this episode gave you some strategies and insights to shake up on how you lead in life and business. If this inspired you to take action and you're wondering what is it like to work together? There are three different ways we can work together.
The first one is private coaching. If you're looking to build something from the ground up, whether it is breaking into a new industry, really own your leadership on a deeper level and lead teams. Or if you're looking to build your business, then private coaching is definitely for you. It's that one, one hands on support, that custom personalization of being able to make that happen. And so typically within private coaching, we are developing and having you own your expertise. We're really growing your ability to do strategic decision making, build that confidence within yourself and make sure that you're going after what you really want and not Federaling for what you think you deserve, which I love.
The second one is my group [00:08:00] coaching program, which is the pivot and promotion community. This is a 12 month program. So for a full year, it is for career development, for growth, for accountability, for shared learning. So if you're someone who likes the community space, a group setting for that extra support, to make sure that you're achieving your goals, then this is definitely for you. This is for the person who is the aspiring leader. Who is either just stepping into leadership or is moving from individual contributor to leader. And you want to be able to practice being able to have direct or difficult conversations, speak up, be visible, network, and be seen as a leader. You already are.
Then this is the space for you. So go ahead and do that. Click and take a look at that program. And last but not least is speaking engagement. So if you are somebody who wants somebody to come in for your organization, for your team, for your conference and deliver a talk or a workshop, that's really going to challenge the status quo and help motivate and inspire, then I'm for you. So the next step after all of this to go to my website at Dani Tan. [00:09:00] com. com. And you can book a call for any of these three options. We'll get on the call. We'll talk about what it's like to work together and then we'll take it from there. So hopefully this was more than enough to get you started to take bold and badass action.
And I will see you next week.
